Dr Spink’s contradictory stance imperils the green belt

The recent decision not to sell the former police station in Hall Crescent, Hadleigh is a victory for short-sightedness claims Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Castle Point, Julian Ware-Lane.

“Dr Spink has been campaigning for this to remain a police station.  However, I am far from convinced that this is the best solution. When there are housing targets to be met and the police obviously have no real need for this property then this seems an ideal spot for some limited development. Given the choice between either building on green fields or developing the old police station I know which solution I prefer,” said a dismayed Julian.

“Developments will have to fit in with the Hadleigh regeneration plan anyway. The Police should know what their needs and priorities are and though the public may have wants, judgements have to be made.”

“It would seem to me that Dr Spink wanted to re-establish a Police Station there again and that is what he is not getting. Could it be that the Police were brow beaten into changing their minds about retaining the property even though the economics are against keeping it?”

The UKIP MP is trying to be all things to all men. This is not a tenable position. If Essex Police had plans to re-open the Hall Crescent property as a police station in the future then this would get our support.

“It seems contradictory to complain about green belt development and then campaign against a potential brown field site” said Julian.

Dr Spink is quoted as saying: - “The police have a duty to use pubic assets efficiently so I was very worried about the future of this site.” Yet Essex Police “have decided this is not the best use of resources as it would take officers off the beat, but they have decided to keep the building nevertheless.” These statements are surely mutually exclusive.  Dr Spink can only claim that he prevented the assets from being properly used. He is not getting a police presence.

The Labour Party in Castle Point is committed to protecting the green belt in the Borough. This means adopting a mature and realistic approach to brown field development options. Using people’s concerns as a photo opportunity with no real thought to the consequences is irresponsible. We want the MP to re-think his position on this issue and back the Labour Party’s desire to meet housing targets in a way that minimises impact on our green spaces.
