Richard Howitt launches European campaign in Castle Point 28th Mar 2009

A packed and appreciative audience witnessed Labour MEP Richard Howitt set out the importance of Europe to Castle Point and Britain, and why it was vital that there was a strong Labour presence in Europe.

In launching the European campaign in Castle Point Richard said that being in the EU was a positive benefit to the UK: “Being in the EU means lower prices and more choice in the high street and beyond. Consumers are protected by higher standards and better information.”

He added that the Conservative Party wants to withdraw from the Social Chapter which has benefitted so many people in Essex and across Britain: “young people and part-time workers enjoy greater protection at work thanks to European rules. We have also helped parents ensuring their right to statutory maternity and paternity leave. The workplace is less exploitative because of our work in Europe.”

Born and bred Canvey Resident, Katie Curtis, is also on Labour’s panel of candidates for the European elections.

With less than ten weeks to polling day on June 4th, Katie said that it was important that people voted to prevent Britain being represented by extremists. “Low turnout increases the chances for fringe groups to win seats. It would be shaming for our country, and especially the East of England, to have the far right pass the finishing line, especially when our parents and grandparents fought so bravely against such views. People should vote to prevent this.”

Parliamentary Candidate, Julian Ware-Lane, said he was pleased that Richard had chosen to come to Castle Point. “Whether you are an enthusiast or a cynic regarding Europe it is important that voters express their choices. The Tories are isolated in Europe and have no meaningful influence. Richard Howitt is a superb ambassador for his native Essex and the UK.”

There are also Essex County Council elections on the June 4th.
